Back Issue Review- Aquaman: The Trench

   So this week for my back issue review I am review Geoff Johns masterpiece Aquaman: The Trench. Now before you say Aquaman is lame and had crappy powers read this book! Truly one of the greatest reinventions of a hero in a long time. So without further a due here is my review of Aquaman: The Trench.

   So Aquaman: The Trench is the relaunch of Aquaman into the New 52 brand that DC had, it was written by the amazing Geoff Johns and the art is by the ever impressive Ivan Reis. This book follows Aquaman before he takes the Throne of Atlantis, in this book he is torn between Atlantis and the surface world that he grew up on, both of which are in danger from the trench. Now this book does many things great but the main thing that sets it apart is the fact that the people of the surface world treat Aquaman the same way a lot of comic book readers treat him, they think he is lame. Heck there is a point on like the third page where a cop is worried other officers will make fun of him because of the fact that Aquaman saved him. Overall this book is littered with amazing story telling and the art is perfect for the character of Aquaman. This is truly one of my all time favourite books and a must read for anyone period!

Film Review- Avengers: Age of Ultron

   So this week for my film review I have decided to review the second Avengers film Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now in my opinion I believe the two Avengers films to be equal, there are some who say the first is better and some who say the second is better, but I am undetermined and believe the films to be equal. So without further a due here is my review of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

   So Avengers: Age of Ultron takes place after the events of Captain America: The Winter Solider and S.H.I.E.L.D is no longer around and Hydra has just begun to risen. The movie opens with an intense action sequence of the Avengers attacking a Hydra base to try and get back Loki's sceptre from the first film. From here we meet twins who will act alongside the villainous Ultron. The Avengers eventually recover the sceptre and the movie officially kicks off with Tony Stark and Bruce Banner accidentally creating Ultron who was supposed to be a peace keeping program but goes crazy and plans to destroy the planet. I'm going to stop here for risk of spoilers. The cinematography in this films is great and the writing is superb, both of which is credit to the great Joss Whedon. The characters grow from the first films and the stakes are just as high as ever. Overall Avengers: Age of Ultron is a fantastic film for anyone who is in love with Joss Whedon and the Marvel cinematic universe.

This Week in Comics!

  So I had a very small week for books with only 3 this week those being Saga #31, Darth Vader #13 and The Dark Knight 3 #1. The book I've decided to review this week is The Dark Knight 3. So without further a due here is my review.

  So The Dark Knight 3 is written by Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello and the first issue was actually quite good. The writers manage to accomplish very much by using very few words and they let Kubert art do all the talking. Overall this is a very good start to this new Dark Knight run and it seems to me like Azzarello has a bright future writing Batman with his recent titles getting such good reviews. This book captures the Miller style without feeling like Frank Miller did all the work, hints of Miller are define try there but overall the book seems to me like a passing of the torch from one great writer to another.  Overall I score this book a solid 8/10.

Back Issue Review- Astonishing X-Men

   I would once again like to apologize for my late review, as the semester comes to a close I find myself more and more busy (who would have thought). So This week I wanted to review my favourite comic book series of all-time, Astonishing X-Men written by the ever so talented Joss Whedon and draw by one of my favourite artist John Cassady. So without further a due here is my review of Astonishing X-Men.

    So Astonishing X-Men is told through the perspective of Kitty Pryde and centres on the return of the X-Men and the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, Scott Summers and Emma Frost are now running the school and the X-Men have been scaled down to Kitty Pryde, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Beast, Wolverine and one mystery member who gets revealed about 5 or 6 issues in. I don't want to go into too much detail about the plot for fear if spoiling anything of this fantastic story. This is one of the best written books to have come out in a long time and Joss Whedon handles every sentence like its a work of art and that is not to take anything away from Cassady who's artwork is simply beautiful and out of this world! Overall this is in my opinion the best X-Men story ever written and one of the greatest comic book series ever written! It is a must read for anyone period.

Film Review- Almost Famous

  This weeks film review is for Cameron Crowe's work of art Almost Famous. I would like to state that this is one of my all time favourite movies and is very enjoyable from start to finish. So without further a due here is my review of Almost Famous.

      Almost Famous is the story of a young boy who wants to be a rock and roll critic, he eventually gets the chance to write for Rolling Stones magazine and go on tour with a fictional band called Stillwater. While on the tour our main character William Miller falls in love with a 'band aid' named Penny Lane. The movie is a beautifully written love story that just happens to revolve around rock and roll. The film is filled with some spectacular performances and some of the best music put on screen in recent memory. Overall Almost Famous is a film classic and should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone, but just like the tag line says 'Experience it. Enjoy it. Just don't fall for it.' .

This Week in Comics!

    So first off I would like to apologize for not doing my weekly back issue review this week as I was extremely busy. So now that I've got that out of the way it is time to talk comics, this week I had a total of 5 books on my pull list they were: Batman Europa #1, Extraordinary X-Men #2, Star Wars #12, Star Wars: Vader Down #1, and The Mighty Thor #1. So the book this week that I have chose as the stand out for my review is The Mighty Thor #1. So without further a due lets get to the review!

     So for those of you that don't know when Jason Aaron embarked on this whole female Thor journey a while back I thought it was going to be stupid, then I picked up Thor #1 and was sold it was incredible and quickly became my favourite book on the market, so when the series was put on hold until November I was more than a little disappointed. But now we have the triumphant return of what is still my favourite book (just under a slightly different tittle) The Mighty Thor! First off if you haven't read Thor #1-8 by Jason Aaron go pick it up now as there will be spoilers as to who the new Thor is, so this book picks up where issue 8 left us, we now know Jane Foster is Thor and we all know she is dying of cancer, in this issue we get a lot of political commentary between different realms and we see how Jane is struggling with being both a dying mortal and the strongest god in the universe. This issue sees fantastic artwork and some great writing with a great reveal at the end of the issue! Overall I give this book a 9.2/10!

Film Review- Spectre

   First off I would like to apologize for not posting my film review yesterday on its regular date, also because of this my back issue review will also be late (coming tomorrow). But now on to the main attraction my film review this week is for the newest James Bond film Spectre. This week I went out to see this movie so I thought it would be perfect to review and review spoiler free! So without further a due here is my review of Spectre.

     So Spectre is the newest James Bond film and the fourth film for actor Daniel Craig, Sam Mendes (Skyfall, Road to Perdition, American Beauty) returns to direct his second Bond film and does it in beautiful fashion with some of the best visuals ever seen in a 007 movie. Daniel Craig once again owns the role of James Bond, Lèa Seydoux is possibly the best Bond girl yet and Christoph Waltz plays a perfect villain, the biggest surprise in the acting department is Dave Bautista who plays an unstoppable assassin for the villainous Spectre. The movie overall is very good, it doesn't quite reach the level of Skyfall or Casino Royale but defiantly tops that of Quantum of Solace. Overall the movie is very enjoyable and connects strongly to the other Daniel Craig 007 films. If you are a 007 fan this is a must see movie and an enjoyable film for the common movie fan alike!

This Week in Comics!

  My pull list this week was quite big with a total of 7 books of which included: All New All Different Avengers #1, Batman #46,Star Wars: Darth Vader #12, Captain America: White # 4, Secret Wars #7, Justice League Darkseid War: Green Lantern and Justice League Darkseid War: Shazam. The book that stood out to me this week for my quick review was Batman #46 by: Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. So without further a due here is my review of Batman #46!

    Batman #46 continues the story of the new Batman (Commissioner Gordon) and his battle against new Batman villain Mr. Bloom. Now this is probably the best single issue of Batman to have come out in a while. Our new Batman must face Mr. Bloom while a young wannabe Robin searches for who Mr. Bloom is. The issue has lots of action and offers a good narrative. The art is what we have come to expect from Greg Capullo and isn't anything spectacular but is very good none the less. Overall this issue of Batman is enjoyable from start to finish and gets a solid 8.4/10 from me!

Back Issue Review- The Dark Knight Returns

    This week for my back issue review I have decided to review Frank Miller's epic story Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, I have chose this book for a couple of reasons, 1: Because it is quite simply one of the greatest comics ever written and 2: We are about to get an unneeded part three this month (I will expand on this more later in the review). So without further a due here is my review of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns!

     So this book is set in the future of the Batman universe where Bruce Wayne is now retired and no longer Batman. Gotham was supposedly cleaned up and all the criminals have been locked up in Arkham. This is until a new gang of criminals called the mutants come to Gotham and force Bruce Wayne out of retirement to battle crime once again as an aged Batman. This book is a brilliant work of art that shows not only how Gotham shaped who Batman is but how Batman has shaped his criminals. The writing in this book is superb and you only need to read the monologue at the start of the book to know that, on top of that the off-beat artwork works perfectly with the story and seems to flow in what sometimes seem like over stuffed pages. Now the story has always been what I considered to be the final chapter in the Batman universe, it brings all of his greatest villains to the forefront and gives each and equal chance to fight Batman in as epic a way as possible. We get epic conclusions to his battles with Two-Face and the Joker and finally find out who would win in a fight between Batman and Superman. This is part of the reason why I am not too happy with the fact that there is a third part coming out to this book, the fact that there was a part two is a big enough shame. But I will reserve judgement until part three comes out. So for any Batman fan out there this is the ultimate story and is what I consider the conclusion to his epic history! I recommend this book to any Batman fan looking for quite possibly the definitive ending to his story!

Film Review- Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

     Okay so this week for my film review I have decided to review both an all time classic and one of my favourite movies ever. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. So just to be clear I'm going to review this film as if we knew nothing about these characters (even though I do) the reason for this is because I find the film to be more entertaining when you go into it without an any prior knowledge of the series which is exactly the way everyone who say the film upon release would have been. Now without further a due I bring you my review of Star Wars.

   So Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope or Star Wars (Which is what it was called upon its release) is the forth chapter in the continuing Star Wars saga and was also the first film released. In this film we find our young hero named Luke Skywalker on a farm in the middle of nowhere in the universe. His life is dull and he craves adventure which is deprived of him until he stumbles upon two droids who are carrying vital information for a band of rebels fighting against the evil galactic empire. This eventually leads to Luke meeting my personal favourite Star Wars character Obi Wan Kenobi. Obi Wan or Ben Kenobi was a Jedi knight of the republic, they kept peace in the galaxy in the time before the empire came to power. Obi Wan tells Luke of how his father was a good friend of his and eventually the two leave the boring old planet to try and bring the droids to the rebels. But to get to the rebels they need a ship which is where Han Solo and Chewbacca two of the films most beloved characters come in. Together they set out for the planet of Alderan where the rebel base is supposed to be. This leads to them getting caught by the empire and having to navigate their way out of the dreaded Death Star where Princess Leia one of the leaders of the rebels is being held captive. Here is where I will end my review of the film so as not to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't seen the movie (If you haven't get on it). The movie overall is fantastic and is one of cinemas all time greats. It has great heroes and even better villains with the evil Grand Moff Tarkin and the powerful Darth Vader. The film does lack slightly in the acting department but nothing substantial that holds the film back. Overall this is a must see movie for anyone in the world!

This Week In Comics!

  This week was a big one for me as I picked up 6 books total, which are as follows: Klaus #1, Justice League Darkseid War: Flash, Justice League Darkseid War: Superman, Extraordinary X-Men #1, The Amazing Spiderman #3, and Star Wars #11. Out of all these books I have decided to do a full review for Klaus since it was my favourite from this week, the rest of the books will get ratings out of 10. So without further a due here is my review!

     Klaus #1 is written by the legendary Grant Morrison and drawn by Dan Mora. This is the first issue in what is going to be a six issue mini series. The story is that of Santa Claus and tells us what Grant Morrison pictures as his origin. Overall the book was written very well and gives a certain mid-evil times fantasy vibe and the artwork that goes along with the story is just gorgeous. This book does obviously change some things most notably Santa Claus's appearance, no longer is he a fat old guy but he is shown as a young man who is in very good shape. The story centres around a town where the children aren't aloud to have any toys and is ruled by a cruel Baron. I haven't got much more to go off at this point with out giving away too much. Overall this was a great start for this mini series and you can believe me that I will return for the next  issue! Overall I give this book a 9.5/10.

No More Slave Leia For Star Wars

        No this is not my regular post about comic books in my regular schedule, this is a post that is in fact in relation to something Disney released earlier today. In case you haven't heard Disney will no longer be producing anything to do with slave Leia from Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, not only that but if reference is made to her it will be by the name 'Hutt Slayer Leia'. Now while I certainly don't want to see Carrie Fisher wear the costume again (for multiple reasons) I can say I am not fully on board with this decision. Now before you jump on me and call me a sexist piece of crap hear me out. The whole Salve Leia costume has been a main stay in pop culture ever since its first appearance, its been seen everywhere from cosplay costumes to even an episode of Friends. Now I can see why Disney would be against the idea of having one of fictions most beloved female heroines be called a slave and I get why you would want to change the name, but that's not what's got me so fired up. No my friends what has me so fired up is the fact that this will effect the way artist on any Star Wars comics for Marvel draw Leia from now on, that's right in addition to no more Slave Leia, or sorry 'Hutt Slayer Leia' Disney also doesn't want any Marvel artist drawing Leia in any 'sexy' poses! The reason this has me pissed off is because I feel like this limits creativity for an artist and even a writer. If you have to shape your story around what big corporations want it can ruin the ability to tell an effective story. The reason the beginning of Return of the Jedi works so well is because we feel as if our heroes have finally been defeated and having Leia wear that skimpy gold bikini was just another reminder of how much trouble our heroes were in. Now I'm not saying we should sit here and promote 'Hutt Slayer Leia' all I'm saying is that there are times when you need to know what is a good thing, and a bad thing to get rid of, especially in a franchise as beloved as Star Wars.

Back Issue Review- The Walking Dead: Days Gone Bye

  This week for my back issue review I'm sticking with the Halloween theme and reviewing The Walking Dead: Days Gone Bye. This is one of my favourite trade paperbacks for the simple reason that it is both extremely well written and has some fantastic art work. The book (and remained of the series) is written by Robert Kirkman and it is illustrated by Tony Moore. This is one of those books that grabs you and hooks you from the very first panel. For me Days Gone Bye is quite simply one of the greatest comics ever written and got me to actually dish out money for the compendium 1 which cost me around $65.00.  *Spoiler Alert* The book starts out much like the show with main characters Rick and Shane trying to arrest some old crazy guy but in the process Rick get shot and wakes up in a coma, only the world he wakes up to is quite different from that he left. With zombies now roaming the earth Rick has to fight his way from his hospital bed to find his wife (Lorie) and son (Carl). When he finally does this he finds them safe with his best friend Shane. This drives Shane mad because we find out that he and Rick's wife were together while Rick was in his coma. The book ends with Rick having to kill his best friend and taking over as leader of the group.

     Overall this is a great read and one of my favourite reads! I recommend this book to any Walking Dead fans or any hardcore Image Comics fans!

Film Review

         This week I am doing my film review a day early mainly because I have prior commitments for Halloween. So without further a due this week I will be reviewing the 1994 visual masterpiece The Crow. 

          First off the reason I chose The Crow is because I wanted to stick with the whole Halloween theme, second what better way to kick off my Blogs first week then with a review of one of my top 20 favourite films. For starters The Crow is a visual masterpiece and is beautiful to look at. Second the film has a rather gripping plot. I want to start by commenting on the obvious and that is a the death of star Brandon Lee during production. His performance in this film is fantastic and he will live on in the hearts of fans everywhere for the rest of eternity. The movie itself has a good pace and centres around a young couple who are going to get married on Halloween but get killed the day before. The husband Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) then comes back from the dead as an unstoppable force and seeks revenge for the his and his brides murders. This movie is action packed and offers up some classic lines from cinema history. If you have never seen The Crow I would strongly suggest this film, it packs a powerful punch and offers some touching moments.


         My final score for this film is a solid 8/10.

This Week in Comics!

           Lots of great books came out this week but I myself only picked up two, the titles I picked up this week are Batman and Robin Eternal #4 and Justice league Darkseid War: Batman #1. Both titles are parts of on-going series, Batman and Robin Eternal is a weekly on-going series which started four weeks ago, so far the series has been great! Writers Scott Snyder (Batman, Wytches) and James Tynion IV (Batman Eternal) team up yet again for this weekly series. The story takes place in the continuity of Scott Snyder's Batman book, where *Spoiler alert* Bruce Wayne is no longer Batman and has been replaced by Jim Gordon and his Robot Batsuit. This story sees the return of Dick Grayson to Gotham where he is trying to find the mysterious Mother, with the help of clues left behind by Bruce Wayne before he lost his memory (See Endgame by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo) thus far the story has offered looks into the past history of Batman and Robin when Dick Grayson was Robin. This issue takes a brake from the flashbacks and focuses on a more action packed set of events in which Grayson is trying to protect a Bruce Wayne with memory loss from a group of brainwashed people. Without giving away too much of the plot this weeks issue of Batman and Robin Eternal #4 is a must read for any Batman fan looking to wet his whistle with a great story and some great art.

    Now on the my next review which is for Justice League Darkseid War: Batman #1, ah yes another Batman title this time in the continuity of superstar writer Geoff Johns (Shazam, Aquaman) Justice League book. First things first if you haven't been reading Darkseid War stop right here and go pick it up! It may quite simply be the best story line to come out from DC comic since Batman: Death of the Family. The combination of Geoff Johns ambitions and amazing ideas with Jason Fabok's mind blowing art has created quite simply one of the greatest pieces of comic book literature in the last ten years. This issues is a one shot which comes off the main title and will be followed by five more one shots! Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok did not do this issue but the art is stellar and writing is good. It offers a look into our changed hero after he was turned into a god during the Darkseid War. The issue gets wordy at times but if you have been reading Darkseid War this is a must read, and if you haven't been reading Darkseid War, well then go pick it up!
